Conceptual Change in Preschoolers: Treasure Hunt

Age: 2-5 Years

Time/Location: About 30 minutes playing games with a researcher at Queen’s University!

Background: In daily life, we often need to make decisions based on a limited amount of information. Based on the decisions we make, we then collect new information. Sometimes the information that we collect aligns with what we already believed to be true, and other times the new information might challenge our pre-existing beliefs. Our ability to incorporate this new information with our original beliefs is thought to help us make better choices over time.

This study asks questions like:

  • How do kids think about new information when making decisions?

  • Do children make different decisions if they get information contradicts their beliefs than if they get information confirms what they already think is true?

  • Can seeing how children use new information to make decisions on one task tell us anything about how children will perform on other tasks?
